Potential Long-term effects of COVID-19

Long-Term effects of COVID-19 in children and teens

It is not known yet whether children who have had COVID-19 are more or less likely than adults to experience continuing symptoms, such as: Cognitive dysfunction (Brain fog) / Fatigue / Depression / Shortness of breath and Diabetes type 1.

How do Long COVID symptoms vary between individuals?

A new study, based on 273,618 individuals in the United States who had COVID-19, found:

- Women are more likely to suffer from headaches, abdominal symptoms, anxiety/depression.

- Men are more likely to suffer from breathing difficulties and cognitive symptoms.

- Younger patients suffer mostly from headaches, abdominal symptoms, and anxiety/depression.

- Older patients are more likely to suffer from cognitive symptoms.

Predict the risk of Long COVID

Data regarding age, asthma history, and symptoms during COVID infection is being collected to predict which patients are at risk of Long COVID, currently in the accuracy measuring stage. According to a study recently published in the journal Nature Communications, which collected data from COVID-19 infected patients infected between April 2020 and August 2021 (without taking into account participants’ vaccination status.

- Individuals who developed Long COVID have lower levels of IgM and IgG 3 antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, compared to those who quickly recovered.

- Asthma history is associated with Long COVID.

COVID-19 vaccines can reduce the risk of Long COVID

The symptoms of Long COVID are not completely understood yet, especially in patients who were infected with the Omicron variant. The virus has altered since the studies carried out on patients infected with the Alpha and Delta variants in 2020 - 2021. However, available data suggests that mRNA vaccinated patients, besides having milder symptoms following COVID infection, develop decreased severity of Long COVID compared to patients with inactivated vaccines, viral vector vaccines, or no vaccines at all.
